Story behind NINJA DRESS | Tsuya Essence Dress

About the design of the Tsuya Essence Dress.

The Tsuya Essence Dress expresses
fundamental human desire,
with a special focus on the back design.

The rounded opening at the back
represents the three realms of desire in Buddhist thought.

Through this curved form,
desire is expressed not as excess,
but as awareness.

About the silhouette.

Human desire continues to expand
when we are not consciously aware of it.

We expressed this idea through the dress’s bold, expansive skirt silhouette.

Although the skirt contains many panels and inserts,
we refined the pattern again and again
to ensure the silhouette remains clean and beautiful.

The volume is intentional —and carefully controlled.

About the material.

This piece is made entirely
from our originally developed textile,
using rayon, cotton, and silk.

It uses more fabric than any other item in the collection,
creating an exceptionally luxurious sense of volume and presence.

The richness comes not from decoration,
but from the generosity of the material itself.

Designer’s Voice

The front of the Tsuya Essence Dress is intentionally quiet, while the back reveals a sculptural form shaped with clear intention.

The back design features three rounded cuttings inspired by the “three instinctive desires,” once considered great enemies for ninjas. These curves express the tension between restraint and impulse — a balance between discipline and human instinct.

For the material, we used our original textile woven in Kiryu, Gunma, a city renowned worldwide for producing fabrics for luxury fashion houses. The fabric blends rayon, cotton, and silk, creating a refined texture with a subtle sheen and graceful drape that moves naturally with the body.

The contrast between the softness of the material and the sharpness of the form gives the black dress a quiet yet mysterious presence.

This piece was designed to draw out the beauty that naturally emerges from within the person who wears it.

A dress that reflects both discipline and desire —
the silent elegance of NINJA TOKYO.
